Unlike previous and current attempts to resolve individual crises or catastrophes, from global climate chaos and earthquakes to extinctions, deforestation, war, disease, and poverty, this approach uses a global top-down framework of goals and limits to coordinate the local and regional bottom-up efforts to address the symptoms of imbalance that are all related in one global system of domiture (coevolving cultures and natures).This book is coordinated by Alan Wittbecker, with contributions from Arne Naess, John B. Cobb, Jr., Michael Fox, Twila Jacobsen, and Mike Barnes. Others have agreed to submit sections for the next incarnation. The book is long, at 522 pages, but is ordered logically. Although some sections seem incomplete, and there seem to be a few problems with consistency, this work never fails to provoke or inspire.
The authors are right, that it is time for a unified approach, using an ecological perspective, to shape a global design initiative to begin coordinating all human cultures to work together to balance the human use of and impacts on the planet, while preserving and restoring the wild systems necessary for self-renewal. This approach needs the contributions of everyone. As an engineer, I'm trying to write a section on reviewing technology. Although this printed draft summarizes the work so far, the authors urge everyone to participate through an operating draft and the (in-process) wiki at [...].
